Reader’s Question:

I have just moved here in Cleveland, Ohio. Love my job in Cleveland, love my neighborhood. But… I went to register my car and showed them my current auto insurance card and they would not allow me to register. My coverage is still valid. What the heck?

Welcome to Ohio!

Doesn’t sound like you are off to the best start, but let’s see if we can help. In Ohio, you must register a vehicle with a valid auto insurance card and coverage. Lacking that documentation, you will be unable to register. Your vehicle must be registered and have an auto insurance policy that complies with state regulations to legally be on the road. Sometimes relocated drivers do not get around to this immediately, but they should.

Most likely your registration was denied because your existing auto insurance policy did not have limits that satisfied the state requirements. As long as you are relocating, you may want to connect with a local auto insurance agent in Cleveland, OH and establish a relationship. He will certainly be able to help with your auto insurance policy and make sure you have coverage that will enable you to properly register your vehicle. At the same time, he may be able to help you with a homeowners policy in Cleveland, Ohio too! Good luck with your new location, Homer. Hope all goes well in Ohio, Homer.
